How it all started

Hello, my name is Evan Meyer, and I am currently a Board Member for the Ocean Park Neighborhood Association in Santa Monica, California. I am spearheading a grassroots urban improvement and streetscape beautification project primarily through art, in the form of murals designed by local luminaries and painted by the artists, myself, and other motivated volunteers. The goal is to beautify Lincoln Boulevard through community art, murals, and general streetscape improvements.

Inspired by the art and community spirit of Burning Man, and the street art mecca of Wynwood, Miami, we have become an ongoing community project dedicated to making Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica a more interesting, artistic, and appealing place to work, travel, and visit. Residents have long contended with Lincoln Blvd.’s downtrodden appearance, with its proliferation of dingy storefronts, abandoned phone booths, rusted publication vending machines, trash-filled alleys, broken pavement, and polluted gutters. Only a few streets away, the sun shines on gardens behind eclectic bungalows, or reflects off the Santa Monica Bay down long graceful hills bordered by towering palms. It’s time to take it upon ourselves to beautify Lincoln Boulevard, and turn it into a clean, arty and welcoming thoroughfare that we can be proud of and want to visit and spend time on.

I am primarily funding this project myself, to prove that we, as citizens, are capable of making change, and that the reward from improving the world through one’s own effort supersedes monetary considerations. Generous donations have also been made from locals and businesses to help offset this cost and can be viewed on our "donations" page. Feel free to contribute to our cause with your time, your art, your wall or your financial assistance. We can create change together!

We are working hard to improve the quality of life of locals and visitors alike. It's our home, our community, and our world, so let’s stop talking and do something to help make it beautiful!!!

Love,

Evan

The Values we instill

  • Be a Giver. The act of Giving is the most rewarding and satisfying act. When you give, the door to unlimited possibilities is availble to you.

  • Community is about working together... businesses and residents alike. People work better in groups than they do on their own. Start leveraging these synergies to help each others business grow, and attract more customers.

  • Go out of your way for your neighbor. Pick up their trash for them if they didn't notice it. Help them make their business better. We all win or no one wins.

  • Less talking and complaining; take it upon yourself to elicit the change you want to see.

ART RULES

  • Art must not contain cultural, religious, or political references.

  • Art must be positive, vibrant, impactful

  • You will not get paid, although it IS required that you align your personal goals with the project's goals, leveraging the project to achieve such. Your reward is also knowing you did something good, and contributed to your community, as well having your art seen by tens of thousands of people per day.  It's a nice way to spend a Sunday. It's time to give back  :-)

  • I will furnish all supplies and be your primary helper (if desired) in getting the job done.

  • You must commit to finishing your art.

  • Example themes: nature, geometry, cosmos
